MARC Records

Downloading records             "Troubleshooting"

The WILBOR consortium will provide MARC records for titles in the collection.  When new titles are purchased the records will be put on the CILSA server, to be downloaded by ftp to your system.

Each time new records are received (roughly once per month) an e-mail will be sent to the WILBOR list to let you know there are more records to download.  The link to the site is below; contact one of the WILBOR Team if you have lost the login information.

To download MARC records:

ftp://67.41.109.126/

1. The records are in folders by arrival date and each folder will contain more than one batch of records.  We tried to keep the files a manageable size for downloading into different systems.

2.       Accessing the link to the ftp server seems to working better using Firefox  as your browser.

3.       Several libraries have had to work with their firewall security to be able to access the ftp server so this maybe something some libraries will need to look into

4.       Using an ftp client, like FileZilla http://filezilla-project.org/, is another way you can access the MARC Record files on the ftp server if link is not cooperating

MARC record "troubleshooting"

We were able to import the MARC records ok, but it looks as though we may have to assign barcodes and add holding info in order for the Overdrive books to show up in our OPAC.   Does anyone have suggestions for handling this part of the process?

"In order for the record to look good in our catalog (and for people to know what kind of "book" it is), we have to add local holding information.  We don't have to assign a barcode in our system.  Here's what we came up with:

LOCATION CALL # STATUS
IPL Online Audiobooks  OAB Pat         ONLINE

A "regular" item in our collection would have whether it was checked in or the due date if checked out in the status line.  We didn't want people to go to the shelf to look for it!  And we use "OAB" for "Online Audiobook" in the call number as a further indicator (to patrons and staff alike, I should be sure to say!) that it isn't going to be found on our shelves!"  [Joyce Godwin]
