Fall 2010 WILBOR and the Annual Survey

At the end of FY10, you can report WILBOR holdings of 3962.

You can count the WILBOR audiobooks in the collection part of the survey ONLY if you have MARC records for them in the catalog.   (Yes, we know, but it's a federal definition and that's what we have for now.)

You CAN count WILBOR circs in the circulation section, however, even if the titles aren't in your catalog.

5-18-10
The WILBOR authentication server has been successfully moved, and is authenticating again (for those libraries not doing authentication through their own ILS.)

5-18-10
Overdrive has created new promo materials, including a new set with a rural theme--featuring a WILBOR librarian's husband and son.  Look for an e-mail with information about a new bulk order for promo materials.  To see the materials, go to the promoview page

5-18-10
We will be welcoming new libraries to the WILBOR consortium on July 1.

7/16/09
For your annual report: the WILBOR collection had 2524 copies on June 30.

6/29/09
Overdrive has updated the Quick Start Guide (tri-fold brochure) and it's available now on the Promotions page.

6/23/09
Many wma titles can now be transferred to iPods.  You must use the Overdrive  Media Console 3.2 (new) and a PC.  MP3 titles can still be downloaded to Macs and transferred to iPods.

6/10/09
We'll be welcoming new members to the consortium at the end of July!

6/3/09
The first Maximum Access ("always available") subscription expired and there is a new set of 25 titles that are always available to patrons.  Check them out in the "Always Available" section of the WILBOR website.  (Some of the popular titles from the previous subscription have been purchased for the permanent collection.)

12/12/08
With new members of the consortium coming on board with WILBOR soon we have scheduled some training from Overdrive in using WILBOR. Anyone from any WILBOR library is welcome to attend, whether a new member or not--if you have new staff, or just want a refresher, please join us for the training. There are 3 sessions scheduled:

Dec 15th 2:00-3:00 Access Code: 5736005

Dec 16th 9:00-10:00 Access Code: 5736000 Recorded

Dec 17th 9:00-10:00 Access Code: 5736000

12/1/08

Zune player is now compatible with wma and mp3 titles.

There is now a Mac version of the Overdrive Media Console, making it even easier for iPod and Mac users to download the mp3 audiobooks

October 2008

More than 100 mp3 titles are now available on WILBOR, so you iPod users can now enjoy WILBOR. These titles, which can be downloaded and transferred to iPods, can be found in several ways:

1) they are marked with “mp3” on search results lists;
2) a separate “featured” section on the WILBOR home page shows mp3 titles;
3) an advanced search: leave all fields blank, except for “format,” and select “Overdrive mp3 audiobook”

We will be scheduling some mp3 information sessions in Wimba but here are a few things to know/remember about the mp3 format:

* Those who have been downloading and listening to wma formatted books can also download mp3 titles; they should be compatible with non-Apple devices, also.

* The publishers determine what is available in mp3 format. Many publishers have exclusive contracts with other providers who sell the books in mp3 format so you will not see bestseller titles—at least, not yet. Overdrive continues to negotiate with publishers and as contracts are re-negotiated we expect to see more titles available.

* The collection of mp3 titles will continue to grow as we purchase more titles; we will continue to purchase in wma format, as well. Current titles in wma format will still NOT be compatible with iPods; they will remain in wma format.

* We are hopeful that a Maximum Access subscription (“always available”) will soon be available for mp3 titles. Overdrive has had many requests for that and are working on that possibility.

* Patrons who download an mp3 title will have an extra step: because this format does not have DRM attached they will be accepting an End User Agreement each time they download an mp3 title.

* The mp3 format is compatible with iPods, but patrons with Shuffles won’t use the Media Console. The mp3 titles can be transferred to the Shuffle, it is just a different process.

* Overdrive Media Console is not yet compatible with the Mac operating system but we expect that the first of the year.

WILBOR Stats and the Annual Survey (8/11/2008)

You do NOT need to have records for the downloadable audiobooks in your catalog in order to include the stats in the annual survey. (It certainly is a good idea, though, as one more way in which patrons can find out about the downloadables available to them)  They will not be counted as part of your collection/holdings in the survey, but you will report the number that were available to your patrons on June 30, and the number that were checked out by your patrons.

There are several new questions on the annual survey related to virtual collections; the placement of the questions is designed to enable you to count the downloadables, but not have it adversely impact your turnover rate or the 3% weeding requirement. (For all libraries but particularly for small libraries, adding more than 1000 audio titles that are never withdrawn would have significant effect on turnover rate and weeding.)

Here are the numbers of the relevant questions/measures on the survey:

Part 4: Line 72b--Expenditures for virtual materials, including downloadable

Part 5: Holdings of downloadable materials is NOT included here, but in Part 9; this is part of the turnover rate consideration, and to prevent adverse effect on the 3% weeding requirement (since the WILBOR collection isn't "weeded.")

Part 6: 118c--Virtual circulation, including downloadable audio

Part 9: 187a--Number of downloadable audiobooks available as of 6/30/08 (# available on WILBOR on that date was 1207;  Correction:  1232, to include the Maximum Access)

188a--Number of downloadable audiobooks downloaded in 2007-2008. This is the number checked out by your patrons, i.e., the same number as 118c.

You can find the number of downloads by your library's patrons, as well as many other statistics, on your Content Reserve site. If you have questions about that please let us know!
